Texas A&M-San Antonio library at Main Campus Building is celebrating Hispanic Heritage month by displaying books by Hispanic authors, children’s books, Hispanic autobiographies, books about Mexican culture, stories of Latina women and “500 years of Chicano history.”
A&M-San Antonio also will be celebrating this month by presenting Latin music from around the world at “Mariachi Sangre Mexicana” from noon-1 p.m Sept. 28 in the courtyard of the Main Campus Building.
Also, “Henry Brun and the Latin Playerz” will be performing from noon-1 p.m. Oct. 12 in the courtyard of Main Campus.
Sarah Timm, library specialist and public services, said she knew it was Hispanic Heritage month and wanted to utilize the new shelf space by putting up a display of Hispanic literature.
“At the old library we didn’t have the room to put stuff up, but now that we have more room I can do more displays like this,” Timm said.
Psychology senior Morgan Rand was looking for information on the San Antonio Missions for her English paper when she came across the book “Hispanic Texas: A Historical Guide” by Helen Simmons and Cathryn A. Hoyt. The guide contains information about mission-style architecture, ranching and rodeos and Tex-Mex cuisine.
Madelyne Reed, graduate student in counseling said, “I saw the shelves and thought they were children’s books but then I realized they were all Hispanic books.”
One significant observation this month is a celebration referred to as El Gritó, meaning the cry of independence. Mexicans celebrate by decorating their streets, houses, and buildings with the nation’s colors red, white and green and in the evening with a cry shouting ¡Viva México! This day is also known as Dieciseis de Septíembre, or Sept. 16, which is the Mexican Independence Day.
