Money Smart Week encourages financial awareness

What is Money Smart Week?

Created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002, Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign intended to help consumers better manage their personal finances. Nationally, Money Smart Week takes place on April 18-25.

Does Texas A&M University-San Antonio hold a Money Smart Week?

Yes. This year, the university will host Money Smart Week events on April 21-23. This is the second year the university coordinated talks, panels and advice to educate students on financial matters.

What was the inspiration?

The College of Business wanted to educate and inform students. Faculty members asked,  “What can we do to become helpful to college students?” From that question emerged this year’s topics:  negotiation skills, entrepreneurship, and and evaluating students’ strengths and financial worth.

“Our university mission is to stimulate growth and development in the south side of San Antonio and there is no better way to start with programs and events like these,” says Leonard Love, management professor and co-director of this year’s campus Money Smart Week.

Who organized the university’s Money Smart Week?

Money Smart Week is a collaboration between University Library, Career Services and the College of Business. Much credit goes to Business Librarian Tammy Woodward for initiating the idea, Love says.

How will students benefit?

There are several reasons student should attend.  The first, Love says, is to inspire students to pursue entrepreneurialism. Second is the chance for students to learn from the experience of  successful entrepreneurs and the mistakes they made along the way. Passing on financial and business knowledge, he said, will help students avoid common pitfalls and mistakes.

What is Entrepreneurship Night?

Entrepreneurship Night will focus on how to turn students’ business plans into reality.  Former A&M-San Antonio students will lead the discussion.
