University staff, student clubs and organizations welcomed students to Texas A&M-San Antonio during the second day of a two-day orientation Jan. 12 at Brooks City-Base Campus. Students received information and free school supplies. Briefly profiled here are three diverse transfer students from the approximately 90 students who attended the orientation.
Psychology junior Yaritza Farillas
A traditional student planning to earn her master’s in psychology, Farillas said she was considering The Texas A&M System before A&M-San Antonio was built.
“When I heard they built one in San Antonio I knew that’s where I would go,” Farillas said.
Having transferred from Palo Alto College, Farillas said her psychology studies will focus on San Antonio’s female youth.
Education junior Rene Diaz Jr.
Intending to earn his bachelor’s in education, Diaz said he hopes to teach youth at an early age that they can attend college.
“My gym teacher always told us that we had to save up thousands of dollars to go to college, that we couldn’t afford it,” Diaz recalled, “but here I am thanks to the Pell Grant.”
Diaz, a first generation college student, said his mother was inspired to attend college herself after he began his studies, and is also a student attending A&M-San Antonio.
Master of Business Administration Phani Myneni
Having earned her bachelor’s from a university in India, Myneni currently works as lead information technology services for Valero. She said she’s looking forward to the semester and that she received a lot of information during the orientation.
“I’ve been with [Valero] for a while and now I feel it’s time to further my education,” Myeni said.
