Men’s basketball club making strides

Texas A&M University-San Antonio now has a men’s basketball club and students are welcome to join if they want to play.

It was only a matter of time before someone took the initiative and diligence to establish the first men’s basketball club at the university. That student is Will Manning, president and coach of the club. His name may sound familiar to some as he serves as Mr. Texas A&M-San Antonio since inaugurated at Fall Fest.

Manning is a psychology major and senior at the university where he has made it a point to be very involved.

“I noticed that there wasn’t a club set up,” Manning said. “So, I walked into student activities and learned the process, and two weeks later, bam, we had a team.”

Everything else rolled out quickly once the club was approved.

Manning was put in contact with other university and college basketball clubs; just a mere three weeks later they had their first scheduled game against Southwest Texas Junior College.

The team’s record: zero and four.

The growth of a men’s basketball club has the campus buzzing with interest.

“I wasn’t sure who to reach out to or where to go to let people know they we’re here,” Manning said. “The biggest way our classmates can support us is to show up to games, our schedule is on jagsync, or simply just encourage us.”

JagSync is an online tool you can log into in order to find clubs, teams, and information about all activities that happen on campus.

The team is comprised of 15 students. Manning and the team are always looking for new talent though so at this time anyone interested doesn’t have to wait until tryouts, just reach out to Manning or vice president Charles Williams.

The team meets for practice at Mission Concepcion, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“I am very excited for the team’s future; we have a great future ahead of us,” Williams said, a freshman and criminology major. When asked about being a part of the team, he added, “I was most excited to be on the first basketball team that Texas A&M-San Antonio will have. Coach Manning is very knowledgeable and I believe he’s leading the team in the right direction.”

Although they are just part of the beginning, Williams seems to have a point. Down the line their picture will be displayed as the team who started it all.

“In six months we will be the hardest working team in off-season, competing in scrimmages and other exhibition games, ensuring we do nothing but get better. This is my baby and I’m devoted to seeing the team succeed,” Manning said.
