It was nothing short of thrilling when 2 Legit 2 Quit took down the 210 Baddies 23-21 at an intramural volleyball game the night of Oct. 15.
The first of three sets started with the 210 Baddies having a commanding 8-3 lead. 210 Baddie player Jaclynn Lizama helped establish that lead with three aces in a row that took 2 Legit’s squad by surprise. However, 2 Legit 2 Quit came roaring back with aces of their own as well as cross-court shots that were too tough for the 210 Baddies to return. 2 Legit took their first lead in the game at 11-10 and never looked back as they won the first set 25-16.
Intramural volleyball teams at A&M-San Antonio play best of three sets, and the winner is whoever makes 25 points first or whoever has the highest score after 15 minutes.
The second game was the true nail biter, starting out neck and neck all the way until 2 Legit 2 Quit pulled away with an 18-14 lead. The game seemed like it was over as 2 Legit was up 20-16, with just two minutes left to play, until the unthinkable happened. The 210 Baddies came back with two aces in a row by Lizama.
What seemed like a secure victory for 2 Legit 2 Quit turned into a dog fight that came down to the wire.
Although with the 210 Baddies still trailing by only two points, they had a big task on their hand, now not only facing 2 Legit 2 Quit, but also facing the clock with one minute left to tie the game and force a win by a two-game winner.
With 45 seconds left, Baddies player James Otholt spiked one right in the center. With 25 seconds left on the clock, Britney Garcia and server Lizama scrambled to get the ball ready for the serve. Lizama served a heater, but 2 Legit 2 Quit bumped and spiked it over.
The ball was then bumped back by the 210 Baddies as both teams went for an intense rally with the clock winding down. Garcia of the Baddies sent the ball over to the other side, and as 2 Legit 2 Quit couldn’t send it over, it fell short on their side of the net.
The clock was at double zeros, and the 210 Baddies kept their momentum going and started off with an ace, giving them a 21-20 lead over 2 Legit 2 Quit. However, this would be a short-lived high for the 210 Baddies as 2 Legit pulled off three straight points with each point coming from four rallies each serve.
After the tough loss, Lizama from the 210 Baddies explained how hard the defeat was.
“We came in with a lot of confidence,” said the biology freshman. “Our heads got kind of big and we slacked a little bit, at the end. Like, simple mistakes just got the best of us. They add up.”
With the 210 Baddies having a hot night winning their game Oct. 14 but falling short Thursday, the team now looks forward to coming back stronger for this week’s games.
