The inaugural Texas A&M Esports Showdown is set to make waves. Eight Texas A&M universities, including Texas A&M University-San Antonio, will come together for a day of competitive gaming.

The free event, which is open to the public, will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 at the Boeing Center at Tech Port.

The Esports Showdown will feature intense battles in popular games such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Overwatch 2, said Lindsey Reese, esports coordinator at A&M-San Antonio.

Students from Texas A&M campuses including A&M-San Antonio, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Texas A&M University-Texarkana will compete for the coveted titles of best players within the Texas A&M University system.

Reese said 14 players from A&M-San Antonio will compete, with players set to compete individually in their respective games.

“The event not only marks a significant milestone as the first-ever Texas A&M Esports Showdown but also highlights the growing influence of esports in academia and beyond,” Reese said.

“There are sister schools and chain schools all over the U.S., and I have never seen them do anything like this,” Reese said, noting that media coverage of the event “would be a really great lead into potentially starting a trend for collegiate esports in the future.”

With the increasing popularity of competitive gaming, the event offers a platform for talented students to show off their schools and compete for recognition as the top A&M esports team of the year.

Attendees can look forward to witnessing high-stakes matches, cheering on their favorite teams, and experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of a live esports event.
