Jaguar Fiesta medal goes on sale Tuesday

By Ingrid Wilgen

The Texas A&M University-San Antonio Fiesta medal will roll out Tuesday, March 15. Normally priced at $10, the medal will sell for $7 from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m. at the A&M-San Antonio Bookstore.

Suspended from a maroon Jaguar ribbon with a thick silver stripe running through it is a cascaron spinning within a cascaron. The profile of the university mascot, General, adorns one side of the spinning egg. Brandon Oliver — multimedia, graphics and publications coordinator —  created this year’s medallion.

Gold accents on the medal are to prompt students to participate in the Golden Egg contest held at the fifth annual Festival De Cascarones, Oliver said.

The celebration takes place April 24 in front of the Central Academic Building. Headling the event is award-winning country singer Tracy Lawrence.

Those who RSVP at Festivaldecascarones.com will automatically enter a drawing to win a $2,500 tuition voucher, $1,500 textbook voucher or a 64GB Apple iPad. Winners will be randomly selected.

Last year’s medal was a cracked cascaron that could be opened and closed. It was quite popular Oliver said. The Fiesta Store at 2611 Broadway will also sell the A&M-San Antonio medals on March 15. This year, only 2000 medals were  produced and they will go fast.

“When they are gone they are gone,” Oliver said. “There are no reprints.”

I have worked a lot of jobs in my life: biscuit and coleslaw maker, waitress, veterinary assistant, medical maintenance technician and soldier. The list goes on. Very few of them became part of my life like journalism. I eat it. I breath it. I roll in it. Then I write. I tell stories through the lens. The more I do the better I get. Two semesters as photo editor for the Ranger, the San Antonio College paper, gives a strong foundation that my experiences as managing editor for The Mesquite will continue to build on. My goal as a communications-journalism major, at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, is to become a great storyteller. Stories are our history. It is what our progeny build their lives on. My journey is clear, keep learning, keep listening, never stop creating.
