A program that aims to support students in their professional journey is hosting the tabling event Meet Your Career Peers every Wednesday at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
Launched in March 2024, the Peer Career Ambassador program is part of the Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement.
The next event is from noon – 2 p.m. March 19 in the lobby of the Central Academic Building.
Organizers hope to spread awareness about the university’s peer career ambassadors and the services they provide for students.
Kimberly Martinez, peer career ambassador, said the program offers three types of appointments: Introduction to Resume Building, Introduction to Job Search Tools and Introduction to Interview Prep and Interview Skills.
Candelaria Nieves Perez, peer career ambassador, said students need to know that resources are available to get an early start in growing their professional development skills.
It’s important for students to speak to peers to dissolve any hesitation they might feel when reaching out to an adviser — a task that can seem intimidating for students, said Martinez, a psychology senior hoping to work in law enforcement.
“Speaking from personal experience, it’s so easy to get tunnel vision on the academics, that you kind of fall behind on preparing yourself, whether it’s, like, your resume or interview prepping or just kind of digging deep as to what you want to do career wise — how you want to apply your major and your studies, and how that’s going to transform into what you’re going to be doing after you leave college or university,” Martinez said.
Perez said professional development skills don’t come directly from academics and instead develop from applying what is taught in the classroom to the workforce.
The tabling event will offer free stickers to attendees. The program provides swag such as cups, bubbles, pens, chip clips and candy at previous events.
