Playlist: Your summer road trip soundtrack

COVID-19 brought our lives to a halt over a year ago. However, as more people get vaccinated, a sense of normalcy approaches us.

We can begin to see friends and family again, and even travel. Whether you plan to take a drive down to the beach or go back home for the summer, I created a nine-track playlist for your trip.

Sometimes- Ariana Grande

I would argue that this is one of Grande’s best songs. With an acoustic guitar accompanied by lyrics that never fail to make me teary-eyed, this track feels like summer love.

Grande sings of being completely enamored and devoted to her partner, without hesitation or doubt in a chorus that’s sure to get stuck in your head.

If you’ve experienced love as profound as this track, you’ll undoubtedly take a trip down memory lane.

I ain’t even think of leaving sometimes

I ain’t even think of letting go

I ain’t ever thought of going nowhere

I don’t even see it down the road”

Commitment- Luna Luna

If you enjoy a smooth blend of Spanish and English indie rock, Luna Luna is the band for you.

On “Commitment”, Luna Luna effortlessly transitions between the two languages without skipping a beat. Even if you’re not fluent in Spanish, you’ll find yourself dancing along to this track.

This song embodies what a Texas summer evening feels like, something the Dallas native band is familiar with.

Sometimes- Dreamgirl

If your destination this summer isn’t the beach, this song will have you planning a trip.

It’s a track that has you hooked from the first listen. With graceful vocals and upbeat electric guitars, this soulful song will make you want to roll your windows down in the Texas heat without a care in the world.

I’m wearing blue

Always a touch that I remember

I’m dressed in you

I know you won’t let me die in winter”

Colors- Black Pumas

The Black Pumas are no stranger to the public eye. The Austin band has four Grammy nominations and performed at the 2021 award show.

This track is a necessity for your road trip playlist.

Listening to this while taking a drive down to Corpus Christi will surely have you finding the sublimity in life.

Waves- River-Tones

It’s hard to believe that the River-Tones aren’t more popular. The self-proclaimed “reggae fusion” band gave it their all on this song.

With rich vocals and energetic guitars, this is a can’t-miss track.

“Lay off the gas

Just stay on the path

And don’t you get carried away”

The San Antonio based band frequently performs in the city and surrounding area. Check their Instagram for upcoming shows and support the local music scene.

Only Memories Remain- My Morning Jacket

Ending the playlist on a track like this is definitely a shift in moods.

After a relaxing trip, on the drive home you always find yourself coming back to reality ─ the stress, worries and the things you struggle to forget. Listening to this song, I think you’ll find solace in the past and how things have come to change.

I can’t describe it as anything other than hauntingly beautiful. It’s the perfect track to accompany you on a late night with empty highways.

“The love we share outlives us all

What’s done is done at the end of the day

But still those memories remain”
