Soul Food Festival Wednesday

The Student Programming Board and University Library will host a free Soul Food Festival 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Feb. 29 at Main Campus Building and 4-6 p.m. Brooks City-Base Campus.

This festival closes the University’s sponsored Black History Month programming.

Mr. and Mrs. G’s Home Cooking, 2222 South W.W. White Rd., will cater the event. The menu includes fried chicken, fish nuggets, macaroni and cheese, grits, black-eyed peas and yams. SPB and University Library will provide beverages.

The owner, who refers to herself as Mrs. G, said the menu will feed 250 people.

“It’s kind of a crazy menu!” she said.

Mr. and Mrs. G’s Home Cooking was one of five bids, Jolene Des Roches, counselor disability services coordinator, said.

The restaurant was chosen because it offers the largest menu selection and most reasonable prices, DesRoches said.

Reached by phone, Mrs. G said the South Side eatery has been in business for 23 years. The restaurant was voted Reader’s Choice for best neighborhood restaurant in 2011 by the San Antonio-Express-News.
