6K Sweetheart Fun Run/Walk benefits wounded warriors

By Jose Casarez

In honor of service members returning from war overseas, Texas A&M-San Antonio and Purnell Racing will co-host a Welcome Home Sweetheart 6K fun run/walk at 9 a.m. Feb. 12 at Main Campus Building located at One University Way.

“This race benefits a great program, one I know very well,” said Richard Delgado Jr., manager of military community support for the University. “The Wounded Warrior Project is a charity that serves and helps the thousands of wounded warriors returning home from the current conflicts and to provide assistance to their families.”

Delgado said proceeds from the race will help provide resources to injured service members coming home.

“Our department is always reaching out by attending several events across Texas to provide information on what we do here at TAMU-SA,” Delgado said.

Delgado said the university’s Military Community Relations & Veteran Affairs departments assist veterans in making the transition from military to academic life. The departments currently service over 400 veterans and their families.

Purnell Racing, operated by John Purnell, is a race management company that hosts and manages over 25 races annually for local non-profit organizations, conventions and fun runs. Races range in distance from 5K to 20 miles.

The starting point  for the race begins at Main Campus following up to U.S. Highway 410, to Zarzamora and back to Main Campus.

Rest stops will be available along the course of the race, Purnell said.

A press release distributed by University Communications stated the entry fee is $20 until Feb. 10 and $25 on the day of the race.

Participants can pick up a packet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 10 at Main Campus.

Packets can also be picked up 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 11 at Joseph’s Bakery located at 3420 N St. Mary’s St.

The Welcome Home Sweetheart 6K Run is race No. 2 in the “Best of Texas 2012 Race Series.”  Athletes use the series of races to train for the San Antonio Rock-N-Roll Marathon Nov. 11.

According to purnellracing.com  door prizes will be given out to the registered participants who attend. Door prizes include:
• One night stay at a hotel in downtown San Antonio
• Four $25 cash gift cards
• $50 gift card
• Two gift cards from The Athlete’s Foot
