The inaugural season for the Texas A&M University-San Antonio men’s golf team has been underway in less than favorable settings.
From thick fog, frigid temperatures, to heavy rain, players have experienced “far from preferable conditions” during this season, said head coach Christi Cano.
Mother Nature first struck the team during the final round of their debut in the Houston Classic on Feb. 9. The event took place amid a haze of thick fog that engulfed the Golf Club of Houston.
Next, A&M-San Antonio prepared for the Spring Shootout at TPC San Antonio. The event took place as scheduled on Feb. 22, but the team could not practice traditionally beforehand. The Jags were confined for nine days as winter storm Uri blew through Texas.
“Players would stay in their dorms and play PlayStation,” Cano said.
The Jags’ first chance to get shots up came at On Par Golf on Feb. 21. Players practiced swings and putts indoors using the OPG’s TrackMan Virtual Golf simulator.
A&M-San Antonio traveled back to Houston March 14 to take part in the Prairie View Spring Classic. The team was plagued by heavy rain in both the practice and first rounds of the tournament.
“Thirty-six holes usually lasts about nine hours…all the teams are under the same conditions so it’s more of a mental test,” Cano said of the downpours.
The Prairie View Spring Classic was stalled around 7:30 p.m. March 15 due to heavy rain. The final round concluded on March 16 with A&M-San Antonio finishing in ninth place.
The team’s next outing will be March 27-29 at the Claud Jacobs Invitational hosted by the University of Houston-Victoria.
