Gym Dude Review: Brooks City Base Health & Wellness Center

By Allen Gross and Joe Camacho

Fact Check: Is it free? Communications senior Allen Gross confirms: "Yes, the Brooks City Base Health & Wellness Center is free with a Student ID.

For those looking to shed off the Thanksgiving feast, or those ready to maximize that New Year’s resolution, visit the gym and let the membership begin.

The Brooks City Base Health & Wellness Center,  2860 Louis Bauer, opened its doors to the public Dec. 1. More promotional events are scheduled in the coming weeks.

Today, I got the chance to take my first tour of the entire facility and I must say that it’s very nice indeed.  With all new equipment in each of the rooms, anyone needing to work on that certain muscle will have no problem accomplishing their goal.

A very convenient plus — the gym is ADA certified, allowing those with disabilities to come and exercise on the entire first floor without limitations.

Why wait until January? The time is now — make that the first step towards a new beginning. Take a tour of the gym and all its amenities.

For all current Texas A&M faculty, staff and students membership to the gym is free with a valid school I.D. For all other inquiries on membership visit www.brookscityhwc.com, stop by the facility at  2860 Louis Bauer, San Antonio, TX 78235, or call to the main office 210.251.3997.

Joe Camacho reminds readers to play it safe when working out.

Thanks, Allen. Right there with you. Today I took the opportunity to use and abuse our new gymnasium. Here’s my take: The feeling was a little blah as I am accustomed to a more openly spaced fitness center. The Brooks Wellness Center contains two cardio rooms which contain treadmills, elliptical and bicycle machines. A collegiate style basketball court is also available.

The free-weight area was more spacious than the two cardio rooms, although I did have to make room to do barbell curls. The room is also surrounded with mirrors just in case you like to stare at yourself while you workout.

Next to the room with the free weights is a small room with cable weights. This room contains about eight exercise stations. TVs are hung in every room so you can catch “Good Morning America” during your morning workout or perhaps catch “The Talk” if you workout after lunch.

Getting back to the open spaced gym though, I can say that working out in these seperate rooms made me feel a little isolated. I feel like I didn’t push myself as hard with the weightlifting as I would in a gym with an open floor plan. I suppose with an open floor plan I take comfort in knowing that if 350 lbs of weight is crushing my chest and my skin has turned blue, it would only be a matter of moments before someone noticed my motionless body and got me the medical attention I needed.

That said, please be safe when you work out. A light workout is better than no workout at all. If you do feel the need to push your limits then plan your exercise regimen with a friend or ask anyone on the staff for assistance.

Overall, the Stone Oak fitness center on Brooks City-Base appears to be a top notch facility. All the equipment is new. The second floor is still under construction. I will continue to use these facilities and I urge any students who aspire to attain a higher level of fitness to begin at the Stone Oak fitness center on Brooks City-Base. Students just need to show up to the center with their student ID and fill out the membership form.

So far, we’ve only seen two students, me and Allen. What are you waiting for?
