Finding a great Chinese restaurant on the Southeast side of San Antonio may be a little hard to locate. But, once you see the nearly 20-year-old, little  brick building with the yellow-lettered sign that reads Lung Fung, you’ll know you’ve found a gem.

It’s just after lunch hour and all of the local fire trucks and police cars are gone having already taken their share of the down home delicacies. The sweet smell of Chinese cuisine escapes with every opening of the door.

Walking into the small, dimly lit and intimate setting, the feeling of family consumes you. Every employee is dressed casually (no uniforms) and, because I asked, found they are almost all related and passionately friendly to customers and each other. It’s as if you’ve walked into their relaxed home and they are preparing a meal just for you.

For lunch, I have chosen my personal favorite, sweet and sour chicken. Oh, how long it’s been since we’ve rendezvoused. The perfect portion of breaded chicken, fried rice, egg roll and sweet and sour sauce covers the plate from edge to edge. Nothing is too greasy. Instead, it’s satisfyingly juicy. Large chunks of onion and green bell pepper are placed on top of the chicken and the juices to flow right to the edges of the place.  Take a dip in the warm gooey red sauce and you’ve got your best bite.

Once I discovered the bottom of my plate, I walked up to the register to say hello, pay for my meal and receive my long anticipated fortune.  Behind the register, I noticed my waitress’ little girl curled up three chairs length, innocently dreaming the day away underneath her blanket. The feeling of being surrounded by family, even if it’s not your own, is the secret ingredient and perfect blend of spices that is sprinkled atop every meal.
